Wagga - a strong performer in terms of population
Date: 29 April 2010
Recent media reports have directed their attention to Wagga Wagga, labeling it as “a strong performer in terms of population." According to Australian population expert Bernard Salt, he declared Wagga as benefiting from the "value equation", with the city’s lifestyle attracting an increased number of metropolitan escapees. The value equation is based upon income, cost of living and quality of life. These key ingredients have been attributed to Wagga’s growing population.
The Daily Advertiser reported on April 3, that Mr Salt declared Wagga’s strengthening economy, affordable housing, job opportunities and lifestyle as appealing to people looking to resettle.
Figures have shown Wagga’s population has increased by 977 people between 2008 and 2009, with surrounding regional centres also showing significant population growth. The population in Wagga is projected to exceed 70,000 by the year 2013.
"There are a few reasons why Wagga is always a strong performer including the fact it is a long-term growing town with military, health, aviation, education and agricultural support," said Mr Salt. He also went on to say "Wagga has an appealing lifestyle where job opportunities are available, and with friendly people what more could you want?" While on average people may earn less in Wagga, the cost of buying a house and the cost of living will be less than in Sydney.
Based on the figures reported by the region’s smaller centres, Mr Salt said it was pleasing to see Wagga’s population growth is not being largely supported by the movement of people out of surrounding towns. Mr Salt agreed it could be said Wagga has seen an increase in the number of metropolitan and coastal residents moving to the city.
With its growing population of 60,000 and steady growth in industry, business and service organisations, the future is bright for Wagga Wagga.
